Mosquito light

Mosquito lights are popular because they:

  • Keeps mosquitoes away
  • are cozy
  • has a pleasant scent

However, the lights can ooze a bit and should therefore only be used outdoors. Indoors, you can instead use special mosquito repellent scented sticks.

However, if you tend to get stung a lot, don't rely on mosquito candles alone (use mosquito spray).

How to make a mosquito light - quick and easy

A mosquito light does not need to consist of more than 3 things:

  • A jam jar (or other suitable container)
  • A floating candle (i.e. a candle is made to float in water)
  • An essential oil (lemon eucalyptus or citronella oil)
Mosquito candles have a limited effect on mosquitoes, but work better than most mosquito repellents

It is very important that you use either lemon eucalyptus oil or citronella oilas these oils are the best at keeping mosquitoes away. The oils do not need to be organic as they only need to be burned.

These oils are recommended for mosquito candles as they are most effective against mosquitoes

The approach is simple:

  • Fill the jam jar with water
  • Pour 15 - 20 drops of essential oil into the water
  • Put the floating light in the water and turn it on
  • Set the mosquito light outdoors (where you will be staying)

You can also add decorative items to the water such as fresh herbs, twigs, leaves, stones, lemon slices, etc.

Do the mosquito lights work?

Mosquito lights themselves are not as effective as mosquito spray or Other mosquito repellentsbut they can be used in combination with them. Mosquito repellents are particularly effective because they are applied directly to the areas of the body that are exposed to mosquito bites - where mosquito candles only have a diffuse effect in the air. In addition, some mosquito repellents are based on highly effective chemicals, where candles are simply based on plant oils.

Compared to most mosquito repellents However, mosquito lights are a better choice because almost all mosquito repellents are ineffective in practice. Mosquito lights keep mosquitoes at bay for two reasons:

  • Smoke: They emit smoke and soot that confuses mosquitoes (just like the smoke from a bonfire, for example)
  • Oils: Their strong scent of essential oils scares away mosquitoes (essential oils are also used, for example, in mosquito repellent)

We don't recommend commercial mosquito lights as they are usually too expensive and ineffective (or even completely ineffective!). Instead, we recommend making your own mosquito candles, which is almost as easy as buying ready-made ones.

Alternatives to mosquito lights

The following alternatives to mosquito lights are available:

  • Mosquito coilsMosquito coils are effective because they release smoke and scents that mosquitoes don't like over a long period of time. You can use read more about mosquito coils here.
  • Mosquito traps: Most mosquito traps are ineffective and very often you can question whether their presence makes the mosquito problem even worse due to their ability to attract mosquitoes. Read more about mosquito traps here.
  • Mosquito killersThere are not many effective mosquito killers on the Danish market. In Sweden - where mosquitoes are a much bigger problem - there is a better selection. Gas-powered mosquito killers can be effective, but they are also very expensive. Read more about mosquito killers here.

Remember that mosquito sprays and other mosquito repellents are much more effective than mosquito candles.
